BECOMING PRODUCTIVE

Becoming productive can mean different things to every unique individual. Productivity incorporates various meanings to different people. Some term it as being indulged in physical activity in order to get targeted outcomes, whereas others term it as the state of yielding deliverables by physical and intellectual efforts.  However it is necessary to learn that productivity is merely not measured by the hours invested in doing something, one can spend daily 12-13 hours while doing a task, but if there is no or less outcome that person cannot be termed productive. When one’s action and involvement bring a visible tangible outcome that is termed productivity. Having said that, the time invested in the development of skills is also regarded as being productive.

A different perspective on becoming productive:

Most of the time, people regard the visible outcomes as productive results. When an idea or creativeness brings out new innovation or establishes a new thing in the firm or society that is looked up with the utmost respected act of time investment. In amidst this, we cannot overlook the reality that if an individual spends enormous time for their personal benefits, that too is a productive act. Taking virtual/physical sessions for hard skills and soft skill generation, reading various books and journals by influencing personalities, are also the act of being productive.

The least glamorized part about being productive is taking the required break. We have been fed that one needs to be at their best all the time, but hardly people mention that it is completely normal and human-like to take the break when you feel is needed. Might come shocking to some people, but yes, taking a break when required is being productive.

What does it mean to become productive?

One often wonders what it is like to be productive, or tries to evaluate whether or not what you are doing can be termed as being productive. Well, the answer to this in a subtle way can be given through various instances.

Being productive in the early days of childhood can be termed as being active in school programs, engaging in sports and debate competitions, being regular and punctual in daily tasks, indulging in creative arts, or even reading new books and novels.

Early adulthood, however, is different. An individual can utilize their early twenties by developing various new skills. Gaining knowledge about computers, understanding politics, harnessing public speaking skills, polishing leadership activities. Getting involved in various development and corporate sectors as an intern and volunteer can be another major aspect of being productive at this age. Meeting new people and reading new books are always on the table for an individual to look forward to.

Late adulthood, practically the main career stage where one needs to figure out what profession or business they are to make a living out of. The urge to be innovative, create something tangible is very high at this point. Now, being involved in a streamed career line is the most important part of an individual’s life but having said that one can simply not ignore the power of their mind and how they use it for the betterment of their society is also an example of being productive.

Important Steps towards a productive lifestyle:

A productive lifestyle is not something that can be acquired overnight and be stopped after certain outcomes. It is a continuous process where one remains consistent with their visions and goals and work in a dedicated way. Some of the day to day practices that can ensure a productive lifestyle are:

  • Focus on a significant result. Knowing what you want to achieve will keep you consistent in your way towards its achievement.
  • Distinguish the urgency of the work. Not every work has the same urgency or packed deadline, arranging the work as per their deadlines will help you sort your schedule accurately and the work becomes more efficient.
  • Learning to delegate the minor or least important task to your subordinates or someone else. Doing so will not only save your time but also help someone remain active on their end.
  • Learning to control your attention to channelize it to the needed sources is another vital step towards being productive, when one has various commitments at the same time, the attention span is likely to be diverted to various areas at once. In doing so the deliverables may remain ineffective or fail to meet the targeted deadlines.

Consistency and Becoming Provocative

  • Remaining consistent with the goal is mandatory if you look forward to being a productive person. As mentioned previously, productivity is not measured by the hours you give for any work, rather by the outcome you deliver.
  • Having a secured backup to all your work is another smart choice to start in your daily task. Once we acquire the final reporting that work is termed to be redundant and forgotten somewhere in storage but is highly to be needful in future. Having a secured backup either on google or the cloud will help save the trouble of looking for all the data in the future, also the work becomes efficient.
  • Taking a break, the most underrated productive habit is to distance yourself from the things that are weighing you down and focus on rejuvenation yourself. Self-care is hardly discussed when one talks about productive habits, but the impact it has on an individual’s wellbeing and healthy is uncanny.
  • Despite the work, allocating time for various physical pursuits is also very healthy to practice. Gaming, exercise, jogging, fishing or any similar activities that help one to feel rejuvenated is also a productive involvement.

Ways to ensure productivity at work and daily activities:

Our work performance determines our productivity level. Often the supervisor takes our daily work progress into accounts during the performance evaluation process. Every employee hopes to do well during the PE, if not stand out as best. It is not news that many fall under the incompetent during the first evaluation process and some even lose their job after the probation period. There are, however, a few ways through which one can increase their efficiency in the workplace and deliver the best outcome. A few key contents to being productive at your workplace are:

  1. Scheduling the day: The first step for a productive day

Scheduling the highlights of the day beforehand can result in a tremendous change in your working pattern. When you have a timetable for things you stick more rigidly to achieve one item before it clashes with another one. This will help you complete the task in time and also ensure that no work goes unattended.

  1. Delegation of work:

Delegating the extra work to subordinates is also being productive. In doing so you can make sure that you prioritize the work at hand and assign the less important work to your co-workers so that none of the important work is left underhanded or unattained. Smart delegation is actually the sign of a good leader.

  1. Setting the specific objectives:

Humans tend to have a limit. One cannot entirely cover everything at one time. It is very necessary to set specific objectives for the day or throughout the month that you look forward to achieving. People may fear that in doing so they will miss out on other activities but that is not the actual case. When you have a specific object for the day, you will know where to exert your focus and that can help you plan things without any burden.

  1. Use the two-minute rule:

This rule explains that if any work takes less than two minutes to be done, then do it now. Procrastinating on the small tasks can result in huge pending activities which ultimately will become too much after a time. This will not only lessen your productivity but will also cause lower performance evaluation.

  1. Prioritize the work:

It is without any doubt true that all work is important and every deadline is to be matched. Having said that, it is also true that the nature of some work comparatively is more demanding than the others. It is necessary to assess the urgency of the work and prioritize the time investment and planning accordingly. This is another way of becoming productive.

  1. Take breaks:

Taking a small break after every 2-3 hours is actually a healthy workplace habit. Indulging rigorously in work and refusing to leave the desk until the end of the shift will not only make you monotonous but will also take away all the joy from the work. So take a small break between the working hours to maintain healthy workplace morale.

  1. Read books/ Journals: Helps you to become productive

Reading helps unravel new information on various topics. It also gives helpful insight into the opinions of experts, builds ideas through their references, and learns from their mistakes and fall-outs. There are various books that help people learn about stock markets, understand the business markets, learn tools for accounting, self-help books that encourage people to look beyond the near-surface, and open a bridge to a wider horizon of knowledge.

  1. Show up on time:

Reaching places on time is a crucial life habit that one needs to implement in their day to day activities. This shows the punctuality and seriousness one has towards their goals, firm, people, and commitments. When you give people enough reasons to believe you are genuinely interested and invested in things they turn into your biggest assets throughout the journey.

  1. Limit interruption:

Limit the sources of interruption, not just at the workplace but also at a personal level. Fun is mandatory to every being, but one shouldn’t keep on being distracted by outer factors that will possibly hinder your goal achievements.

  1. Positive Attitude: The most required attitude for becoming productive

If you wonder, how one’s attitude can influence productivity, well one is guided entirely by how one sees things. If you start to rejoice in everything and look forth to every individual as a positive source of knowledge then the profit you acquire may surprise you. We are only the product of our thoughts, if you let yourself believe something is beyond your capacity it will remain so forever. On the contrary, if you take a stand against your areas of improvement, you will look forward to overcoming those and excelling in them.

There are various other things that have worked for people which may or may not be applicable to everyone. In the end, you need to self-evaluate what does and does not work for you, and what inspires you to do better and bring out the best deliverables possible.

The guidelines for a productive lifestyle or the process of becoming productive can look easy and many of us promise to abide by those starting the very moment. Some even manage to go for days doing so, but that one day when we decide to let it loose, that is when the things will fall apart. It is a continuous process and one needs to have certain discipline and strong commitment towards their wellbeing in order to abide by these rules and follow these methods. It is not an unachievable thing, hard it is, but surely not unattainable.
