What exactly is an eSIM?
eSIM cards, unlike typical physical SIM cards, have an embedded chip inside the handset. It is not detachable and remains in the device where it detects the available space. The carrier must support an eSIM in order for it to work. eSIM is currently supported by a small number of carriers, although this is changing.
Nepal Telecom(NTC) would be the first telco in Nepal to provide eSIM cards as a result of this.
Which devices are compatible with eSIM?
Over the last few years, the eSIM ecosystem has expanded. Also, several phone manufacturers have included eSIM card functionality in their devices to help carriers transition to the next-generation SIM profile.
eSIM support is available on Apple’s iPhone 13 Series, iPhone 12 Series, and iPhone 11 Series. Meanwhile, Samsung has enabled eSIM support to its flagship Galaxy S22 Series, S21 Series (in some markets), Galaxy Z Flip, and Galaxy Fold series. With each new moderate to high-end gadget launch, the list of eSIM compatible devices is likely to grow.
Not only do phones have eSIM support, but so do the latest wearables, tablets, and computers. These devices are already on the market in Nepal. Moreover, with the launch of eSIM in Nepal, those devices can immediately connect to mobile networks without the need for phone data.
